About the Item

Klismos chair designed by Danish architect Edvard Thomsen (1884–1980) in 1924 for the Øregård Gymnasium in Hellerup, Copenhagen. The chair was manufactured by Rud Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s most renowned cabinetmakers, celebrated for their impeccable craftsmanship and collaborations with leading architects of the era. The design draws inspiration from the ancient Greek Klismos form, reinterpreted through a refined Danish lens. Constructed in stained beech, the chair features the distinctive curved back and splayed legs characteristic of the classical model, here streamlined and modernized for institutional use. Edvard Thomsen was an influential figure in Danish architecture during the early 20th century, known for his role in shaping public architecture and introducing classical references into modern functional contexts. This chair reflects Thomsen’s architectural sensibility, where structure and ornament are held in perfect balance. These chairs were created specifically for Øregård Gymnasium and were not produced for the general market, making surviving examples exceptionally rare.

Easy chair designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden, 1955. Walnut and leather. This rare easy chair, designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet in 1955, exemplifies Swedish mid-century modern design. Custom-made for the beauty salon at NK’s flagship department store in Stockholm, only six chairs were made and never offered for retail sale. Asplund’s collaboration with NK often involved site-specific furniture, tailored to complement the interiors of the store or other commissioned spaces. This particular chair highlights Asplund’s focus on functionality and elegance, featuring the walnut frame with elegant, flowing curves that define its sophisticated design paired with cognac leather upholstery. Hans Asplund (1921–1994) was a prominent Swedish architect and designer, belonging to the renowned Asplund family of architects, which included his father, Gunnar Asplund, one of Sweden’s most celebrated architectural figures. Hans Asplund is best known for his contributions to Swedish modernism, blending functionality with elegance in both architecture and furniture design. Provenance Architect Hans Asplund (1921-1994). Thence by descent to his son, diplomat and UN ambassador Bo Asplund (1950-2024). Thence by descent to the present owner.
