About the Item

This is an old Japanese primitive-style side chair, crafted sometime during the mid-Showa period (1940s–1960s). It is a one-of-a-kind piece carved entirely from a single large block of Japanese cedar, without any artificial joints or decorative additions. The organic form of the wood and the natural flow of its grain define its structure, while the gently curved backrest seems to embrace the person who sits in it. Over the decades, the surface has aged gracefully into a soft grayish tone, as if naturally bleached by time, harmonizing beautifully with the cedar’s gentle and warm grain. The most striking feature of this chair is the intricate pattern left by wood-boring insects long ago. These countless traces form rhythmic lines, creating a texture reminiscent of an abstract painting. The insects are, of course, no longer present—only the patterns remain, as a quiet testament to the passage of time. The balance between the lines drawn by nature and the sculpting done by human hands is exquisite. It evokes the Japanese sense of “the beauty of time” and the philosophy of wabi-sabi. Viewed from behind, the chair takes on a sculptural quality—functional furniture that simultaneously stands as a piece of art. Simple yet powerful, it is beautiful from every angle. Whether placed in a traditional Japanese interior or a modern minimalist space, it blends effortlessly, bringing a sense of calm and poetic stillness to its surroundings. A truly unique chair born from the harmony between Japan’s natural materials and the sensibility of its craftsmen. Weight: 18 kg ______________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
