About the Item

Laurens Groen for H.H. de Klerk Zonen, side or desk chairs, beech, reupholstered in wool by Dedar, the Netherlands, 1924 This chair by Dutch designer Laurens Groen has a striking, well-documented provenance. In the style of the so-called Amsterdam School, a building, including a temple hall, was built for the vrijmetselaarsloge 'De Noordstar' (Masonic Lodge) in Alkmaar in 1924. Architect Laurens Groen planned the building as well as the interior. As can be seen in historic photographs, the chairs flanked the long sides of the arched hall. Groen designed a rather unique side chair that plays with proportions, lines and textures. Triangles are a repeated form in this design that underlines its origin in the Art Deco period. The seat has the shape of a trapezoid and visually connects with the upholstered part in the backrest in triangular shape. The distinctive wooden frame rests on black feet that contrast with the blonde wood. Multiple Dutch museums like the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, the Netherlands, have this chair in their permanent collection. The listed price is per item.
