About the Item

Mahogany Klismos chair with light brown leather seat made in the early part of the 20th century. The vintage leather is newly upholstered. This piece is most likely Scandinavian and made in Sweden. The klismos chair originated in ancient Greece, perfected by the 5th century BCE and is defined by its curved, splayed legs and a concave backrest. After falling out of fashion, its design was resurrected during the Neoclassical revival in the 18th century thanks to discoveries in Pompeii and Herculaneum. The model was redefined the late 19th century and during the early and mmid 20th century by designers like Samuel Gragg, T.H Robsjohn-Gibbings and Josef Frank. This example is in a good vintage condition with light ware consistent with age and use.
