About the Item

very rare pair of dining chairs by American artist Roy Mcmakin. solid wood construction, Roy McMakin is an American artist, designer, and furniture maker known for his unique fusion of fine art, architecture, and craftsmanship. Born in 1956, McMakin has spent decades exploring the intersections between functional objects and conceptual art, creating works that challenge conventional distinctions between furniture and sculpture. His practice incorporates elements of humor, nostalgia, and deep attention to craftsmanship, making his work highly distinctive and thought-provoking. McMakin studied at the University of California, San Diego, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree. His time at UCSD, particularly during the late 1970s and early 1980s, was instrumental in shaping his conceptual approach to design and art. Influenced by minimalist and conceptual artists, he began to see furniture not just as utilitarian objects but as a medium for artistic expression. In the 1980s, McMakin founded Domestic Furniture Co., a design studio that produced custom furniture with a playful and often subversive twist on traditional forms. His furniture pieces, which frequently incorporated elements of historical design with unexpected proportions or materials, became highly sought after. His ability to blend modernist simplicity with a personal and often emotional sensibility made his work stand out in both the design and art worlds. Beyond furniture, McMakin has been involved in architectural projects, designing homes and interiors that reflect his philosophy of blending art with everyday life. His architectural work, much like his furniture, embraces a sense of familiarity while subtly reinterpreting traditional forms. Through his firm, Domestic Architecture, he has worked on numerous residential and public projects that blur the boundaries between art, architecture, and design. McMakin’s work has been exhibited in major institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle and his pieces are also part of the permanent collections of renowned museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). His exhibitions often highlight the duality in his work—objects that are both ordinary and extraordinary, functional and conceptual. Throughout his career, McMakin has remained committed to exploring the emotional and psychological connections people have with everyday objects; his work challenges viewers to reconsider their relationships with furniture and architecture, questioning how design shapes personal and collective experiences.
