About the Item

Pair of Norwegian Folk Art Chairs, circa 1800-1820 A significant and rare matched pair of early 19th-century side chairs from Rogaland/Vestland, Norway. Representing the height of vernacular craftsmanship, each chair is carved from natural pine with deep, geometric folk art motifs on the backrest. The seat is handwoven from plant-dyed wool, retaining excellent color. This form is documented in the collections of the Stavanger Museum (ST-K.08557 ST-K.04426) and the Norsk Folkemuseum (same type with arms cf. NF.14968-001), attesting to its cultural importance.
