About the Item
Pair of American "scroll pattern" parlor chairs in rosewood by John Henry Belter or Johann Heinrich Belter, noted German American Cabinetmaker from 1844-1863, NYC. The technique used by Belter for these chairs of bending, laminating and molding the shape in rosewood was very innovative for its time. His process was so successful that the chairs and sofas that he produced to this day are in excellent shape generally without showing signs of checks or de-lamination. Note: In addition to this pair of chairs we have four more to potentially make a set of six.
The pattern of these chairs coincides with the German interpretation of the French Louis Philippe style of the mid 1800's. This period in European furniture design marked a return to a more curved line with stylized ornamentation, in contrast to Biedermeier's angular lines. Belter had just immigrated and was setting up shop in NYC at the start of this European movement which greatly influenced his original "scroll" pattern. In our opinion, it is the most sophisticated and beautiful of all Belter patterns because of its relatively simple curves
sculptural, almost contemporary design. The patterns that followed this earlier design were more rococo in style with pierced carvings
exuberant decorative embellishments. Belter employed a staff of cabinet makers in NYC from the Alsace region of Germany.
Measures: 18 1/2" wide x 21" deep x 36 1/2" high.
