About the Item

A rare and early, documented dining chair by Bastiaan Johannes “Bas” van Pelt (1900–1945) - Dutch interior architect, furniture designer, entrepreneur and noted member of the resistance during WWII. An almost identical chair is documented in Timo de Rijk’s authoritative book on The Hague Style (see last picture). Executed in solid oak, the chair expresses a strikingly rationalist, almost cubistic rigor- most notably through the unusually substantial frame section directly beneath the seat: a powerful horizontal mass that visually “grounds” the piece with architectural presence. The tapered back posts and striking asymmetry of proportions reveal van Pelt’s early Hague School phase, before his evolution toward a more mid-century modernist idiom. Elegant in its austerity - pure volume, structure and material - this chair epitomizes the severe beauty of interwar Dutch functionalism. Fully original and newly upholstered. A museum-level example of early modern Dutch design. An eye catching accent piece suitable for curated interiors.
