About the Item

Attention collectors and design purists seeking the pinnacle of 20th-century American modernism: this exceptional set of eight rare model VK-103 'Shield-Back' dining chairs, designed by Vladimir Kagan for Kagan-Dreyfuss, represents one of the most iconic and elusive dining chair designs of Kagan’s career. Sculpted in walnut with an unmistakable architectural silhouette, these chairs function as both refined seating and collectible works of sculptural art. Each chair bears the original Kagan-Dreyfuss embossed stamp beneath the front crossbar, reading “Kagan-Dreyfuss New York – A Vladimir Kagan Design.” These marks not only authenticate the set but also firmly place its production within the formative early years of Kagan’s original partnership with Hugo Dreyfuss, which spanned from 1950 to 1960. Pieces from this period are particularly coveted, as they represent the purest expression of Kagan’s design language before later reinterpretations and reissues. The VK-103 Shield Back design is widely regarded as the most desirable of all Vladimir Kagan dining chair models. The sculpted walnut frames showcase flowing lines, subtle tension, and an organic yet commanding presence that is instantly recognizable. The shield-shaped backrest gives the chair its name and provides a powerful visual identity, balancing strength with elegance in a way few designs ever achieve. While the corresponding armchairs are known for their dramatic wing-like arms, the side chairs in this set offer a sleeker, more refined profile that emphasizes silhouette, proportion, and sculptural restraint. Highly sought after by collectors, interior designers, and serious design investors alike, original VK-103 chairs are increasingly difficult to source, especially in a complete set of eight. Their scarcity, historical importance, and association with one of the most celebrated figures in modern design place them among the most collectible dining chairs of the 20th century. Vladimir Kagan’s work continues to command international attention, and early Kagan-Dreyfuss pieces remain at the top tier of the market. This set would be equally at home in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern, or Danish Modern interior, while also offering striking contrast in Contemporary, Postmodern, Art Deco, Traditional, Transitional, or Classical environments. From an interior design perspective, these chairs are exceptionally versatile and well suited for both residential and commercial applications. Ideal uses include formal dining rooms, penthouse apartments, executive offices, members’ clubs, hotel lobby lounges, creative studios, conference rooms, or refined hospitality settings. They also work beautifully as accent or side chairs, guest seating, hallway or entryway chairs, fireside seating, or statement pieces in a living room or den. Whether acquired by a discerning collector, a design-forward homeowner, or an interior designer sourcing for a high-profile client, this set of eight VK-103 Shield Back dining chairs represents an extraordinary opportunity to own one of the rarest and most celebrated dining chair designs ever produced by Vladimir Kagan. LITERATURE: The Complete Kagan: A Lifetime of Avant-Garde Design, Kagan, pg. 265 Vladimir Kagan Designs, Kagan, pg. 54 MEASUREMENTS: H 36.75" x W 18.75" x D 24" Seat Height: 18" Seat Depth: 17.5" CONDITION: Walnut frames have been refinished and are in excellent vintage condition. Some signs of age and prior use can be seen underneath the refinish as is almost always the case with wood items of this age. Leather (possibly leatherette) seats and backs should be reupholstered. They are original, so it is nice showcasing the existing upholstery while in our showroom, however it would be ideal to reupholster them with new leather or fabric prior to placing them in a high end designer home or studio as they possess stains, fading, some tears and general age and wear. Contact us if you would like us to handle the reupholstery for you. Since the backs and seats can be easily removed, it is very easy and inexpensive to reupholster them to a new leather or fabric of your choosing.

This important piece of design history was not only designed by Vladimir Kagan and handcrafted by Kagan-Dreyfuss in circa 1949 New York... this was also owned by Kagan himself and kept throughout his entire adult life (see provenance notes below). Each of the two pieces (lower credenza and upper dry bar / hutch) are signed on the back with Kagan-Dreyfuss New York stamps. The expansive size provides exceptional storage and use options. Kagan-Dreyfuss (Vladimir Kagan's partnership with Hugo Dreyfuss from circa 1950-1960) stamped pieces are amongst the most sought after by collectors and investors of art and design.
