About the Item

An uncommon side chair designed by Ray Komai and manufactured by J.G. Furniture Company in Brooklyn, New York in 1949. The chair features a molded mahogany plywood body with chrome-plated steel legs and metal detailing on the back of the chair. Komai's influence for this design came from his love of origami, as well as interest in tribal masks from Africa and New Guinea. Knowing this, you can see how the body of the chair takes on the form of a face. The chair is in wonderful vintage condition. The wood has been beautifully refinished and shows very minimal signs of wear. We have left the steel legs original with a very smooth-to-the-touch, oxidized patina which can be seen in the photos. This could be easily removed with some steel wool, if you preferred.
