About the Item

This striking set of six (6) 'Orsay' dining chairs was designed by Gae Aulenti for Knoll International, one of the most respected producers of modern design in the twentieth century. Conceived in 1970 and produced here in 1984 (each chair signed with Knoll International labels with date stamps in 1984), these chairs exemplify Aulenti’s unmistakable approach to architectural seating... bold, sculptural, and intellectually grounded, yet eminently functional. Each chair features a refined black tubular steel frame with integrated armrests and a softly rounded seat and back upholstered in black leather. The design balances industrial strength with ergonomic comfort, creating a silhouette that feels both graphic and welcoming. The Orsay model is celebrated for its versatility, equally at home around a dining table, in a conference or boardroom setting, or as statement seating in a gallery-like residential interior. All chairs retain their original Knoll International product labels, dated 1984, confirming authenticity and early period production. The labels note Knoll’s Madison Avenue address, aligning these examples with documented production for the American and international design market. As a cohesive set of six, they present an increasingly uncommon opportunity to acquire multiple matching examples of this important design. The Orsay chairs are widely recognized as a key work within Gae Aulenti’s furniture legacy and an essential piece of Knoll’s late-modern catalogue. Their strong architectural presence allows them to complement Mid-Century Modern, Postmodern, Contemporary, and Minimalist interiors, while also offering compelling contrast in more traditional or eclectic spaces. Ideal for dining rooms, executive offices, conference rooms, libraries, hospitality environments, or design-forward commercial projects, this set delivers both visual authority and historical significance. An excellent choice for collectors of Italian modern design, architects and interior designers seeking iconic seating, or anyone looking to anchor a space with authentic, museum-level twentieth-century furniture.
