About the Item
A set of "Bastille Chairs" by Dutch architect Piet Blom (1934 - 1999). The design of these is well known in the Netherlands and recognized as a Dutch design icon. It is possible to purchase one chair instead of the set of two.
The Bastille chair with its avantgarde, modernist design combines well with antique modernist pieces from the early 1920s, as well as with modern design pieces. We have illustrated this with a couple of pictures and a video of a set up using 1920s -30s pieces.
Architect Piet Blom is well known and famous for his unusual cube houses in Rotterdam and Helmond, which were realized in the early 1970s (see in last image).
Blom designed the Bastille chairs in 1964 for the mensa/canteen of the Technical University in Twente, Netherlands. Only about 400 were ever manufactured. After renovation of the university 200 pieces survived. This set of chairs was amongst the few that were salvaged and restored, and were then used in the university of Delft.
In the 1960s Piet Blom designed the ''Bastille'' canteen to become an exciting castle full of stairs and corridors where students could meet. The building was baptized ''Bastille'' as a reference to the famous Parisian prison fortres, with its massive stone facades and high positioned windows were little light came through. The Bastille had a square vertical core with a stairwell, and Blom placed four large concrete blocks around it. The complex placement of the building components created a true labyrinth in the interior with no less than thirteen level differences. The twelve mezzanines had dozens of balustrades, walls, niches and stairs. Blom believed that if students experienced his building as a small town, it would promote their social well-being.
These modernist chairs blended in perfectly in the architectural design of the university, as illustrated in the last photographs.

Huizenga NV Bastille Chair by Piet Blom, 1960s, De Stijl, Rietveld, Mondrian
By Piet Blom
Located in CULEMBORG, GE
Piet Blom was a famous Dutch architect, mostly known for his iconic Cube houses in Rotterdam and Helmond, The Netherlands. One of his early assignments was the design of a student restaurant for the Technical University Twente, called the ‘Bastille’. For this restaurant, Blom also designed the chairs, to be manufactured by Huizenga in 1965.
Made of black and red lacquered wood, the ‘Bastille’ chair features a straight structure, round seat and curved back and legrest. With its unique constructivist shape, the chair is often seen as a homage to Gerrit Rietveld and De Stijl. Only 400 of these chairs were ever made and less than 200...
