Studio D Italy, side chairs, lacquered pine, 1970s
This eye-catching brutalist chair captures the essence of raw design. Crafted by Studio D in Italy during the 1970s, it exemplifies the rugged aesthetic and of that era. The design of this piece is bold and architectural, with a high, flat back that gives it a commanding presence. The tall backrest creates a monolithic look. Straight-edged and thick, the seat and block-like legs emphasize its sturdy, geometric structure. Made from solid pine wood, the chair has been finished in a deep black, highlighting the natural grain and texture of the wood while adding a sense of boldness to its form. Its robust structure and angular lines are a hallmark of the brutalist movement.
Studio D, the Italian manufacturer behind this chair, was also known for producing designs by the renowned designer Edoardo Landi during this period. With its austere silhouette and organic materials, this chair is both a functional object and a sculptural statement.
