About the Item
Erik Chambert (1902–1988) was an influential Swedish interior architect, artist, and furniture designer. He began his career as an apprentice cabinetmaker, before graduating from Konstfack in 1925 as one of their first interior designers. He then became artistic director of the family firm AB Chamberts Möbelfabrik in Norrköping alongside his father and brother, a known master cabinet-maker.
His breakthrough came at the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, where his interior design was hailed as one of the event’s greatest successes, followed by participation in major international exhibitions in Chicago, Brussels, Paris, Berlin, and New York during the 1930s. Since then, Chambert’s work has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions at Galleri Bleue, Moderna Museet, the Nationalmuseum, and in a major retrospective at Norrköping Art Museum in 2015.
This pair of slipper chairs was designed by Erik Chambert in 1939 and produced by AB Chamberts Möbelfabrik during that time. The unique design features a hexagonal backrest with button tufting and subtly curved legs. Recently restored and recovered in a decadently soft, peach-pink mohair by Savel.
