About the Item

The 1960s marked a period of transition in European furniture design, when modernism began to move away from the strict functionalism of the postwar years, seeking instead to create interiors that felt bolder, more tactile, while still attuned to human comfort. Forms embraced unique geometry, defined by clarity of line and restraint rather than ornament. These slipper chairs capture that spirit - they are stripped of excess, yet remain charming and detailed and reveal the inherent beauty of proportion, curve, and surface. The pair is constructed with a gently contoured bentwood base that provides structure and an almost sculptural silhouette. The legs and central stretcher lend a rhythmic balance to the form, their pronounced curvature introducing a sense of motion beneath the stillness of the upholstered seat. The craftsmanship is confident yet discreet, visible in the clean junctions and honest detailing of the joinery. Upholstered in off-white ponyskin, the chairs gain their quiet luxury through material rather than embellishment. The hide’s soft sheen and natural irregularities lend warmth to the geometry of the frame, while its muted tone enhances the overall sense of comfort. Together, the wood and hide establish a dialogue between texture and form: one smooth, one tactile, both grounded in natural beauty. The slipper chair was conceived to complement a space without dominating it, and this pair embodies that intention perfectly. Their low, armless silhouettes suggest informality, yet their quality and poise lend a quiet sophistication. In their appeal, these chairs remain timeless, offering not only a seat, but a study in how design can balance beauty, and craft. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chairs have recently been reconditioned. Due to the nature and age of the materials, the chairs may have some marks, scratches, and discolouration.
