Pair of French Louis XVI Style Giltwood Slipper Armchairs, 19th Century

The vibrant burnished gilding of the chair surfaces is just gorgeous against the columnar architecture of this fine pair of chairs. The distinctly Neoclassical form is dominated by the fluted and tapered column, found with just an edge of air flanking the chair back and also employed in the typical Louis XVI leg. The result is modern and refined, the airy clean lines melding nicely with such a broad range of furnishing eras and one of the primary reasons for why the classical form has been so sought after for so long. Applied carved rosettes at the corners of the crest and apron are detailed and very attractive, the rest of the frame representing variations of the carved acanthus. This is a very attractive pair of chairs, probably crafted during the last years of the 19th century, possibly into the first quarter of the 20th century and built to last the test of time. They remain very comfortable, supportive and sturdy and will certainly be a cherished part of any classical home.
