About the Item

Anfibio sofa-bed designed by Alessandro Becchi for Giovannetti in 1972, a landmark piece of Italian radical and modern design and one of the most iconic convertible sofas of the 20th century. The Anfibio is celebrated for its innovative, mechanism-free transformation system, which allows the sofa to convert into a bed through a simple unfolding movement, without rigid frames or complex hardware. This revolutionary approach gives the piece its distinctive soft, floating appearance and inspired its name, meaning “amphibious.” Generous proportions and enveloping forms define the design, offering both visual impact and exceptional comfort. This three-seat example has been fully restored in Italy. It has been completely reupholstered in high-quality Italian natural leather in a refined grey tone, enhancing the sculptural quality of the design while respecting its original character. The internal mattress has been replaced with a new memory foam mattress, upholstered in premium sheepskin wool, ensuring outstanding comfort in both sofa and bed configurations. Each element has been carefully inspected and serviced individually to guarantee optimal structural integrity, comfort, and long-term durability. The Anfibio sofa-bed is part of the permanent collections of numerous international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it has been featured since 1972. It stands as a symbol of Italian design excellence, combining aesthetic research, craftsmanship, and forward-thinking functionality. Alessandro Becchi (1946–1987) studied at ISIA in Florence and began his career in the late 1960s. His collaboration with Giovannetti led to the creation of some of the most innovative upholstered furniture of the period, including Anfibio, Only You, Brando, Diletto, and Le Bugie. His work is recognized for its originality, experimental spirit, and refined approach to comfort and form. When opened as a bed, the overall footprint measures 200 × 240 cm (78.7 × 94.5 in), while the internal mattress measures 190 × 140 cm (74.8 × 55.1 in). This sofa has been restored in Italy by our workshop, with every element carefully inspected and serviced to ensure the highest possible standards of quality, comfort, and structural integrity. Upon request, additional restoration, reupholstery, or customization services can be discussed to adapt the piece to specific interior or project requirements.

Alessandro Becchi Grey Leather “Anfibio” Three Seater Sofa for Giovannetti, 1972
By Alessandro Becchi, Giovannetti
Located in Vicenza, IT
Anfibio sofa-bed by Alessandro Becchi for Giovannetti, 1972. Fully restored and upholstered with high-quality grey Italian natural leather. Mattress upholstered with soft sheepskin wool. The Anfibio sofa ranks among the most outstanding cult products of Italian design. It is innovative, original, and highly functional; it is a revolutionary sofa-bed, a symbol of high quality and sapient artisanry. It is possible to find it in the permanent collection of 13 museums worldwide, among which the MoMa in New York, since 1972. Alessandro Becchi designed the “Anfibio” sofa for the Italian manufacturer Giovannetti in 1970. It is characterized by generous dimensions and soft, embracing shapes that invite relaxation and comfort. It reminds a floating dinghy thanks to its lack of rigid mechanism. This feature inspired its name, which means amphibious. Furthermore, the sofa presents a rectangular steel structure and padding in non-deformable high-density polyurethane, covered with acrylic thermo-welded fibers and protective fabric. The Anfibio sofa by Giovannetti is available covered in leather or fabric and several colors. This artwork is the ideal convertible solution, the perfect combination of aesthetic research and innovative household living. Alessandro Becchi was born in Florence in 1946. He studied at ISIA in his hometown, and in the late 60s, he began his career as a designer. In 1970 he designed the revolutionary Anfibio sofa for Giovannetti. In 1972, thanks to the success of Anfibio, he was invited to the exhibition “Italy: the New Domestic Landscape” at the Museum of Modern Arts in New York. This date opens in close collaboration with Giovannetti. He designed a series of sofa-beds, such as Only You, Brando, Diletto, and the famous armchairs Le Bugie...
