About the Item
A finely carved French marquise (wide bergère) from the Second Empire period (c.1860), reflecting the Louis XVI revival style that reimagined the neoclassical elegance of the late 18th century (circa 1760–1790).
Its oval back, scrolling arms, and finely detailed carving capture the refinement of the period, featuring stylised ribbon work, acanthus leaves, and egg-and-dart borders punctuated with rosaces above five elegantly tall, fluted legs.
Retaining traces of its original gesso patina, softly aged to reveal the warm wood tones beneath, the piece is a graceful testament to the quiet beauty of handmade pieces that last the test of time.
Recently upholstered in natural, organic fabric with traditional upholsterer’s nails.

French Louis XVI Style Marquise, 19th Century
Located in Atlanta, GA
A French Louis XVI style carved-wood and upholstered marquise from the 19th century. This antique chair-and-a-half from France, often referred to as a marquise (a wide fauteuils chair), showcases all the Louis XVI decorative vocabulary with tightly carved scrolled knuckles, beautiful accent trims, and acanthus leaf accents. Flower head medallions are carved at the knees, above the four round and fluted legs, each tapering gently towards their feet.
