A finely hand carved French two-seater canapé à dossier droit (straight-back sofa) from the Second Empire period (c.1860), reflecting the Louis XVI revival style that reimagined the neoclassical grace of the late 18th century (circa 1760–1790).
It's delicate carving features the stylised pearl work, ribboning, egg-and-dart, acanthus leaves, and cornucopia motifs characteristic of the period, expressing the quiet refinement of its form. The piece also retains its original gesso patina that has a textured French grey and white hues - a palette that enhances the nuances of its carving.
