About the Item

Carlo Scarpa "Cornaro" 2 seat Sofa early edition in Iroko Wood and Fabric, Italy, 1950's Early production Cornaro sofa by Carlo Scarpa for Simon, Italy, 1973. This rare first version was crafted in solid Iroko wood, a dense African hardwood used only in the earliest production runs. Later examples were made in different woods, making this model especially desirable for collectors. The old Iroko wood shows beautiful depth and texture, with its natural tone and precise joinery typical of Scarpa’s architectural approach. Another detail is the stitching of the fabric, giving it a more blocked and compartmental appearance. The stitching in the upholstery is still present in the old models / design whereas in newer models the stichting has been removed which we think is a missed chance because it's an important visible aspect. The beauty is in the details, as always, so buy originals... The original maker’s mark is present. Upholstery is in fair condition with visible natural creases and folds in the fabric, adding character but leaving room for reupholstery if desired. The generous proportions and modular geometry recall the B&B Italia Camaleonda by Mario Bellini from the same era, yet with Scarpa’s unmistakable sense of structure and balance. Carlo Scarpa’s work is celebrated for its architectural precision and poetic materiality, and the Cornaro remains one of his most iconic furniture designs, held in museum collections and featured in major retrospectives. Shipping can be arranged worldwide, with delivery to the U.S. and Asia sometimes within two weeks.
