Circle of Josef Danhauser - Biedermeier sofa, Vienna, circa 1835-1840. Mahogany on softwood body, maple inlays. Base plates on ball feet projecting from the sides. Straight frame. Wide lateral projecting sides, curved like a cornucopia. Cylindrical armrests. The front very richly ornamented with floral and geometric arabesques. Maple inlays. Openwork backrest with multiple curvatures. Generous upholstery. A very rare piece of furniture of outstanding quality. Like hardly any other name Josef Ulrich Danhauser stands for the finest Biedermeier furniture from Vienna. He ran a furniture factory with over one hundred employees. Josef Danhauser was born in Vienna in 1780. He began his artistic career as a wood sculptor and in 1814 founded his own company for the production of furniture, curtains, carpets, watches, glassware and bronzes. He also received church commissions for pulpits and altars. The company was economically extremely successful and expanded rapidly; soon a second branch was established in Budapest. After Danhauser's death in 1829, the company was continued for some time by his son, the famous painter and graphic artist Josef Franz Danhauser (1805-1845). In his factory only furniture was made according to his own designs: Danhauser had an outstanding and comprehensive assortment, his furniture is extremely creative and imaginatively designed without losing its noble character. All his designs have strongly geometric-constructive lines that emphasize their timeless style. (Research and text: Art historian Jens J. Reinke, M.A.) The Biedermeier sofa will be completely restored, newly upholstered, covered with new upholstery fabric and shellac polished by hand in high gloss or silk matt.
