About the Item

A beautifully resolved design by one of Denmark’s leading modernists, this Model 137 sofa by Finn Juhl was produced in the 1950s by France Søn. It reflects Juhl’s sculptural approach to seating, where form, structure, and comfort are brought into a refined harmony. Design This three-seater sofa shows Juhl’s characteristic fluid lines and floating construction. The slender teak frame is executed with precision, gently tapering at the legs and rising to support a tilted backrest. Upholstered in a vivid orange wool fabric, the seat and back offer subtle contouring and rounded volumes that suggest the division of individual seating spaces without interrupting the flow of the design. The rear view reveals an elegantly engineered support system, where a cylindrical teak crossbar and curved stretchers lend rhythm and openness. Original production details remain intact, including the metal France Søn badge and a round inlay disc from the distributor, confirming its provenance. Model 137 embodies the values of Scandinavian modernism: craftsmanship, lightness, and sculptural clarity. With its bold use of colour and poised structure, it remains a compelling design object more than seventy years on. Condition The sofa is in good vintage condition. The teak frame shows only minor signs of use, and the upholstery has been recently redone in a fabric that complements the original spirit of the piece.
