About the Item
An exceptional Howard and Sons ‘Grantley’ sofa.
This original Grantley H&S model sofa features down-filled outswept armrests that sit at the same height as the back, giving the sofa a wide appearance without being overly imposing.
The luxurious seat with down-filled cushions is complemented by the generous down-filled back and arms.
All raised on hand-turned walnut legs, topped with gold-plated brass casters stamped Howard and Sons, London.
The sofa was purchased in the early 1980’s and was fully restored at the time with the classic Howard and Sons floral blue stripe upholstery. The upholstery is in such a remarkable state of preservation as it was covered immediately on return with custom made sofa coverings. The sofa coverings that were made for the sofa have been saved and are included in the sale of the sofa as they are also of wonderful quality.
The maker Howard and Sons, are renowned as being the foremost 19th century upholstery and furniture maker. Their pieces today are highly sought after due to the classic timeless designs and the style they evoke.

Carved in birch and giltwood, the generously padded back is crested with striking volutes, leafage and a central clam shell.
