About the Item

This exceptionally rare freestanding sofa was designed by Poul Volther and produced by the cabinetmaker Erhard Rasmussen in Denmark. This exact sofa was presented at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in 1952 and is possibly the only one ever produced. The striking design features a beautiful, sculptural frame in solid oak wood. The backrest appears to float and is attached to three supporting slats, which creates a beautiful and airy effect. The design of the back side is exceptional, making this a perfect freestanding piece. The way the frame has made illustrate the high level of craftsmanship of the cabinetmaker Erhard Rasmussen. The sofa is in very good condition. It has been reupholstered in an ivory, wool blend fabric. Literature: 'Grete Jalk [ed.]: “40 Years of Danish Furniture Design”, vol. 3, pp. 226.' Pictures of this sofa in its original fabric (as in the literature reference) are available upon request. Other Danish Modern designers in the same era include Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, Ib Kofod Larsen and Ole Wanscher.
