An Important Regency Giltwood Sofa The giltwood surface showing faint lustre, the original traces of the original giltwood surface painstakingly revealed through sensitive restoration, the sofa with scrolling arms, carved foliate details and anthemion detailing, on bun feet with ‘inset’ casters. Shown here in unupholstered stage, ready for clients’ own covering squab cushion. Comparable suite of giltwood furniture can be found at Belton House, Lincolnshire; This sofa probably relates to ‘An elegant burnished gold sofa with carved frame stuffed with best hair into fine canvas £36-0-0, to covering ditto with your silk, incidents and making up £18-10-0’ and ‘To a throwover cotton case for ditto 38-18-0’ supplied by Gillow Co. for the Drawing Room at Belton. The receipt dated 1811 from Gillow Co. Oxford Street, London to the Honourable Lord Brownlow. Height: 90cm, 35 1/2″ Width: 226cm, 7 foot 5″ Depth: 90cm, 35 1/2″
