About the Item
Rare and elegant Italian Art Nouveau (Liberty) wall settee, executed circa 1900 and preserved in an exceptional state of historical coherence. Conceived as an architectural furnishing element, the piece was designed to be placed against a wall, where seating, backrest, and mirror are unified into a single, fluid composition.
The wooden structure is characterized by softly undulating lines and an organically articulated silhouette, fully aligned with the Italian Liberty aesthetic. The carved decoration is refined and restrained, featuring stylized vegetal motifs. Particularly notable is the central carved element of the backrest, where a vertical floral motif acts as a visual and structural connector between the two mirrored panels, emphasizing the upward movement typical of Art Nouveau design.
The original mirror, divided into two sections and set within a shaped wooden frame, displays surface abrasions and oxidation consistent with its age. These signs of wear should be read not as flaws, but as authentic indicators of originality and non-replacement, significantly enhancing the piece's historical and collectible value.
Integrated into the structure on either side of the settee are two small wooden shelves, conceived as functional side supports or display surfaces for personal objects. Elegantly incorporated into the overall design, these shelves reinforce the settee's intended use as an entrance or reception furnishing, where decorative presence and practical function coexist seamlessly.
The seat and back panels retain their original upholstery fabric, an exceptional survival, secured with original decorative studs. The fabric's patina, together with the richly toned wood surface, contributes to an irreplaceable sense of material authenticity developed through time. Preserved in the private collection of architect Gianantonio Malacrida, this settee reflects his sustained interest in Art Nouveau as a foundational moment in the evolution of modern design, where architecture, furniture, and decorative arts converge into a unified vision.
