About the Item
A large antique French Louis XVI style hand-carved giltwood sofa, late 19th century. The frame is constructed from carved wood with water-gilded surface treatment, featuring a central floral crest at the arched crest rail and extending along the upper molding. The back panel is upholstered in a tiger-patterned velvet fabric, secured with a border of spaced brass nailheads around the perimeter of the inner frame. The upholstery contrasts with the carved and gilded structure, which remains consistent with decorative standards of the Louis XVI style.
The sofa's rectangular seat is upholstered in smooth black leather with a row of dark brass nailhead trim running along the lower edge. The apron is carved with a continuous guilloche motif incorporating rosettes and acanthus leaf pods. Four turned, fluted legs support the structure, each with spiral-ribbon carving and foliate motifs near the top. The armrests terminate in volutes, with scrolled supports that are adorned with carved and gilded acanthus details, and padded tiger-velvet upholstered armrests to match the backrest.
This piece reflects the neoclassical aesthetic popular in French furniture design during the reign of Louis XVI, particularly through its use of symmetrical carved floral ornamentation, beading, and fluted architectural supports.
