About the Item
Sofa Bench with Tiles by John Moyr Smith
England
Ebonised wood, mother-of-pearl, brass, ceramic tiles
circa 1875
Dimensions: H × W × D: 99 × 157 × 70 cm, seat height: 45 cm
Description:
This three-seat sofa bench is a striking example of Victorian domestic design in the style of the Aesthetic Movement. The black polished frame, made of ebonised wood, is richly adorned with mother-of-pearl and brass inlays. The seat is upholstered in black velvet and rests on six turned legs.
The most distinctive features of this piece are the three ceramic tiles set into the backrest. These are black-and-white designs with coloured highlights from the "Scottish Novels" series, created by Scottish designer John Moyr Smith (1839–1912) for the firm Minton Hollins
Co. The central pictorial panels depict scenes from novels by Sir Walter Scott, including:
– Quentin Durward – Louis Quentin
Jacqueline
– Bride of Lammermoor – Ravenswood and Lucy
– The Antiquary – Sir Arthur
Dousterswivel
Each tile is framed by ornate decorative borders and bears, in addition to Moyr Smith's signature, the monogram “CH” with Roman numerals.
Additional information:
John Moyr Smith was a close associate of Christopher Dresser and one of the leading designers of the British historicist and Aesthetic Movement.
The Aesthetic Movement valued beauty over utility, aiming to create refined interiors in which every object formed part of a cohesive and artistically composed whole. This sofa is a textbook example of that philosophy.
The tiles from the "Scottish Novels" series, designed in 1875, are rarely found integrated into furniture. They were originally intended for wall decoration in libraries or drawing rooms.
Condition:
Good, solid condition. The seat was reupholstered during an earlier restoration. Minor age-related wear to the wood and mother-of-pearl, but no losses.
