About the Item
Very Rare sofa by North Carolina Blacksmith and furniture designer and maker Max Stout.
Wingback sofa with wooden arm rests in patinated metal and black re-upholstered naugahyde. Our gallery is lucky enough to also have the same sofa in Orange (listed on the site) as well as the coffee table to go between both sofas that is currently not listed and being re-finished. The spindle back is very attractive when exposed to the view of a room, compared to having to place it against a wall.
Very long sofa able to accommodate 4 people at once. Perfect style of sofa for a commercial space as well.
There is not a lot known about Max Stout but we have done our research and due diligence in finding corroborating stories about the designer of the piece.
Max worked in High Point, North Carolina from the 1950s through the 1990s. Excerpt from a news article highlighting Stouts' prolificacy... "For them, he designs through six companies: Southern Seating, The Blacksmith Shop, Dinette Parts and New Products, all of High Point; Carolina Seating at Thomasville, N.C.; and The Fleet Line in Winston-Salem, N.C."
Easy to say that Mr. Stout was working quite a lot. However, given the nature of his predominant customer "newly-marrieds and just starting careerists" (another excerpt from the same article) It is rare to come across his pieces in a preserved state as they were likely tossed in home re-decorations and renovations as metal may not have been something that was thought to be saved, even if for its design sensibility.

Sofa Daybed in Black Leather and Steel
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, sofa or daybed, leather, chrome-plated steel, Austria, 1960s.
This mid-century modern sofa is designed by the acclaimed Austrian furniture designer Johannes Spalt. The design is characterized by a solid construction based on sharp lines and angular shapes noticeable in the body of the seat and the chromed steel base, underlining the clear structured design. The metal legs elevate the seat in a graceful way, which establish an open and more transparent look to the whole unit. The tufted seat with buttons is upholstered in black leather. As outcome, this creates more visual interest and adds a graphical touch to the quite simplistic design. By only one hand movement the 'Constance' transforms from a comfortable sofa to daybed. A very elegant and also nifty technique.
Johannes Spalt (1920-2010) was a postwar Austrian architect. In 1952 he founded the collective "Arbeitsgruppe 4" together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent and Otto Leitner. Their ideas and designs are still a great example of Austrian architecture...
