About the Item

Ole Wanscher Sofa for A. J. Iversen newly upholstered in Kravet tight Boucle. A sofa with a raised, tight back and sloping arms, outward swept rear legs retaining the original horse hair and spring internals. A wonderful sofa very comfortable. This is a rare model sofa hard to find today, made by two major Danish contributors to the Danish Modern Movement. The sofa is in very good condition newly upholstered and restored original internals. Ole Wanscher was integral to the core aesthetic and functionality of modern Danish design. He studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later worked at Klint’s design studio, then becoming an independent furniture designer. He helped shape Danish furniture design as a designer and as an educator when he took over Klint’s professorship at the Academy. Wanscher’s designs earned him numerous accolades, including the Copenhagen Carpenters’ Guild Annual Award and the gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1960 – honors that underscored Wanscher’s esteemed reputation both in Denmark and internationally. A. J. Iversen is considered one of the great cabinet makers of the period and was the cabinetmaker who realized some of Ole Wanscher's signature designs, such as the Egyptian Stool and T Chair. Iversen was Alderman of the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild from 1951 to 1961 and was awarded both the Danish Order of the Dannebrog and the Swedish Order of Vasa for his cabinetmaking achievements. Today, Iversen is recognized as one of the pivotal cabinetmakers who paved the way for Danish modern design.
