About the Item
Pair of large-scale Italian Rococo salon sofas carved in walnut. Each sofa features a continuous serpentine crest rail with symmetrical rocaille carving centered by a shell motif. Scrolling arms flow directly from the back rail. The seat rails are carved with foliate reserves and raised on cabriole legs with restrained ornament.
The sofas retain traditional mortise-and-tenon construction with pegged joints and thick hand-hewn secondary panels. Concealed compartments are integrated at each end. The scale and architectural conception indicate furniture commissioned for formal salon or gallery interiors.
Newly upholstered in a Scalamandré low pile ecru velvet.
