About the Item

Designed by Mario Bellini and produced by B&B Italia in the late 1970s, Le Stelle is one of the most emblematic creations of Italian design from that decade, an expression of the formal and technological research that defined the celebrated partnership between Bellini and the Novedrate-based company. The sofa stands out for its fluid and enveloping silhouette, built on a supporting structure in iron and steel that holds a cold-moulded polyurethane foam and Dacron® fibre padding—cutting-edge materials developed by B&B Italia in collaboration with its internal research centre during the golden age of Italian industrial design. Its profile, both soft and architectural, opens in a visual embrace: the inclined armrests unfold outward like wings, while the curved backrest and generous cushions define a deep, informal comfort. The name Le Stelle evokes a cosmic dimension, typical of Bellini’s poetic and experimental language, who at the time conceived the sofa as a microcosm of form, function and material. The upholstery is the original period fabric, an elasticised textile with diagonal stripes in shades of pink and salmon—a rare and refined chromatic combination that has preserved its authenticity. The original B&B Italia label, still present beneath the seat, certifies its provenance and the patented materials (Lycra®, Polysoft®, Dacron®), offering direct testimony to the company’s technological philosophy. Beyond its aesthetic value, Le Stelle represents a historical document of Italian radical design, where comfort and experimentation coexist in perfect balance. This example, preserved in its original integrity, is a true collector’s piece for enthusiasts and connoisseurs of 20th-century design, as well as a sculptural and poetic presence in any contemporary interior. It shows minimal signs of age, such as a few lateral marks, documented in the photographs and removable with a specific treatment, but is generally in excellent vintage condition. Mario Bellini is one of the most influential Italian architects and designers of the twentieth century, a central figure in the golden age of Italian design. Born in Milan in 1935, he developed a design language in which technological experimentation, sculptural sensitivity and attention to human behaviour merge into soft, fluid and profoundly innovative forms. As Director of Design at Olivetti during the 1960s and 1970s, he created iconic objects such as the Divisumma calculators and revolutionary office machines—now in the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York, which dedicated a monographic exhibition to him as early as 1987. He simultaneously collaborated with major Italian companies—including B&B Italia, Cassina, Vitra and Brionvega—producing furnishings that have become symbols of international design. As an architect, he has completed museums, convention centres and major public works around the world, from the Tokyo Design Center to the new wing of the Musée du Louvre. His vast and multifaceted body of work is considered a benchmark for its ability to unite poetic form, technical innovation and a deeply humanistic approach to design. B&B Italia is one of the most important and innovative companies in contemporary Italian design. Founded in 1966 by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, it quickly became an international reference point for industrial furniture production with high technological and aesthetic content. A pioneer in the use of experimental materials and processes—such as cold-moulded polyurethane foam, developed in its own internal research centre—the company redefined the concept of upholstered furniture, opening new formal and production possibilities. Over the decades it has collaborated with some of the world’s most important designers, including Mario Bellini, Gaetano Pesce, Antonio Citterio, Patricia Urquiola and Zaha Hadid, generating an iconic collection that includes objects now considered symbols of Made in Italy. With a global presence and an identity deeply rooted in Italian design culture, B&B Italia remains a model of excellence, capable of combining research, innovation and a sophisticated vision of contemporary living.

Viscontea Armchair by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Simon Internation
By Simon International, Achille Pier Giacomo Castiglioni
Located in Conversano, IT
Rare and extraordinary Viscontea armchair, designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Simon Gavina-a refined industrial reinterpretation of the Sanluca armchair from twenty years earlier and a true icon of 1980s Italian design. This piece is often mistakenly attributed to the Gavina Technical Studio; however, the reissue was entrusted to the Castiglioni brothers, as clearly stated in Simon's original advertising materials. Published in leading design magazines of the time, the Viscontea is a perfect synthesis of formal experimentation and enveloping comfort. Its bold and sculptural silhouette, marked by the iconic "double curve" of the backrest-evoking the profile of a noble collar or the shape of a stylized pelican-makes the Viscontea instantly recognizable and visually striking. The fully padded structure, upholstered in original bright green Alcantara, emphasizes the theatrical nature of the seat and the craftsmanship behind its creation, while the enveloping volume invites the sitter into a protective, immersive comfort zone that balances art and function. Produced by Simon International under the direction of Dino Gavina, this armchair stands as one of the pinnacles of the Castiglioni brothers' collaboration-brilliant interpreters of the radical and innovative thinking that brought Italian design to global fame. The original upholstery, bearing the Simon label beneath the shell, guarantees the authenticity of the piece. A collector's item that is increasingly rare on the market, this armchair doesn't just furnish a space-it defines it. Ideal for both contemporary interiors and curated collections, the Viscontea is a visionary tribute to 20th-century design. In near-perfect condition, with only minimal signs of use on the base-otherwise, it appears as new. Minor signs of age may be present but do not affect functionality. Kindly consider these characteristics prior to purchase. Simon International was founded in 1968 by Dino Gavina with the aim of moving beyond traditional industrial logic and restoring a cultural and poetic dimension to design, where furniture becomes a conceptual and intellectual expression. The name "Simon" was chosen to represent a new, abstract, and international identity. The brand stood out for its production of sophisticated, minimal, and architectural furnishings-often straddling the line between art and design-crafted with premium materials and artisanal care. Simon collaborated with masters such as Carlo Scarpa, Kazuhide Takahama, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Marcel Breuer, Man Ray, Tobia Scarpa, and Mario Ceroli, creating pieces that have become true cult classics of Italian design-frequently published and now highly sought after by collectors. In 2013, Cassina acquired the Simon collection, preserving its original vision and reintroducing its iconic pieces through the "SimonCollection." Simon remains one of the most radical and visionary experiences in 20th-century Italian design. Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni were among the most influential and innovative Italian designers of the 20th century, key figures in the golden age of Italian design, celebrated for their ability to blend functionality, irony, and formal research into everyday objects elevated to icon status. Sons of the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni, both earned architecture degrees from the Politecnico di Milano and began working together in the 1950s, founding a studio known for its experimental and deeply interdisciplinary approach that combined architecture, art, engineering, and popular culture. They collaborated with the most important Italian design companies, including Flos, Zanotta, Cassina, Kartell, and Simon Gavina, creating historically significant products such as the Arco lamp, Toio lamp, Mezzadro seat, Sella...
