Robin Day for Habitat Three Seater Mid-Century "Forum" Sofa

About the Item

The iconic Forum sofa was designed by British designer Robin Day. This three seater Forum sofa and lounge set was produced for Habitat and features a solid oak case frame, Italian-made cream leather cushions and chromed steel legs. The matching Robin Day lounge chair is also available. Robin Day’s radical design for the Forum Sofa and Lounge Chair puts the structure on the outside; slender exterior chromed metal square bars support the wood panelled frame which in turn houses the leather upholstery. Robin Day was one of the most influential British furniture designers of the twentieth century and together with his wife, the designer Lucienne Day, has often been compared to their US contemporaries, Charles and Ray Eames. He came to prominence at the Festival of Britain in 1951, designing the seating for the Royal Festival Hall. Day's designs are highly sought after and difficult to find in the states. The Forum sofa and lounge chair work well in mid-century, post modern and contemporary settings. We currently have this set paired with a monumental patinated brass Mastercraft brass coffee table and David Cressey lamp. Dimensions (sofa): 82" wide x 34" deep x 28" tall Condition: Very good vintage condition. The oak frame is in excellent condition with beautiful grain patterns. The chrome is clean with no wear to be seen and the seat webbing is all tight and intact. The cream leather is in good vintage condition. There are scratches, creases and minor flaws on a couple of the seat cushions as expected with age. It shows very well.

Beautiful set of three, 1970s Robert Maxwell stoneware critter sculptures for Earthgender. The set includes: three critters. Very good condition. See photos. Shows extremely well. Two of the three are signed on underside. Robert Maxwell has always worked with stoneware. Stoneware is a high-fire ware, second only to porcelain in terms of vitrification. Objects usually emerge from the bisque firing a light tan color but can be turned to rust (red-brown) by reduction (reducing the amount of oxygen in the kiln.) Maxwell generally favors the rust colored body, which he often leaves unglazed when producing his signature style animals. His animals start life just like any other object on the potter’s wheel. The difference is that midway in the process a typical vessel form morphs into an imaginary animal.
