About the Item

A rare and beautifully preserved example of Gastón Rinaldi’s iconic “Saturno” sofa, designed in 1958 for RIMA, this example was produced in 1970. Upholstered in its original charcoal grey bouclé fabric, this piece has seen minimal use—having resided in a private guest house—and remains in remarkable vintage condition. Rinaldi, an Italian-Argentine designer, is celebrated for his sophisticated synthesis of sculptural form and ergonomic comfort. The Saturno sofa embodies his signature style, featuring a sweeping, crescent-shaped silhouette and elegantly contoured lines that make it a standout focal point in any interior. Though often mistakenly thought of as Italian, Rinaldi was born and based in Argentina, where he played a key role in defining mid-century South American modernism. After his successful tenure at RIMA, he founded his own firm, Thema, in 1974, further cementing his legacy in the region’s design history. Highly sought after by collectors and decorators alike, this Saturno sofa offers both historical importance and enduring style. With its authentic 1970 production date, untouched original upholstery, and excellent provenance, it represents a unique opportunity to own a museum-worthy piece of Latin American design heritage—at once functional, sculptural, and timeless. Rinaldi won the 1954 Compasso d’Oro for his DU30 chair (also for Rima). Rinaldi left Rima in 1974 to found his own company “Thema,” The sofa has sat in a rarely used guest house for the last 20 years which accounts for its excellent vintage condition.

Warren McArthur Style No. 977L AUR 3 Seater Sofa Celadon Mohair 1938
By Warren McArthur Corporation, Warren McArthur
Located in Camden, ME
Rare and early Warren McArthur Style No. 977L AUR three-seat sofa, circa 1938. This example represents a transitional phase in McArthur’s production, preceding his later work designing aircraft seating during the 1940s. Constructed with McArthur’s patented system of precision-engineered anodized aluminum tubing, the frame exemplifies his mastery of structural lightness and visual clarity. The softly contoured seat and back reflect his ergonomic sensibility and his pursuit of mechanical elegance in domestic furnishings. Distinctive black rubber “donuts” at both the feet and armrests are original design features, later replaced in subsequent production with smaller fittings. This early detail, combined with the elongated frame geometry, firmly situates the piece within McArthur’s pre-war output. Reupholstered in celadon green mohair with contrasting ivory piping, the sofa presents a refined interplay of color and texture — industrial yet luxurious. The aluminum retains a subtle, even patina consistent with age. This example is both labeled and cataloged, underscoring its authenticity within McArthur’s documented oeuvre. It is only the second 977L AUR I have handled; the last example was acquired in 2013. A superb and historically significant work from one of America’s foremost machine-age designers, bridging the evolution from streamline moderne furniture...
