About the Item

A slat back three-seat sofa, an early design by Warren McArthur manufactured in Rome, New York in 1933-1934. The slat back seating of Warren McArthur is his first seating design introduced in his earliest line of furniture production in Los Angeles between 1930 to 1933 predating his introduction to aluminum tubing. This sofa's tubular frame and slatted back is designed to flex as one sits providing an ergonomic support beyond sprung cushions commonly found in the welded steel furniture of his contemporaries both American and European. The side profile of his frame features four horizontal tubes that delineate the concise elements of the strength of his frame while providing an elegant visual composition. The tube closest to the six legs creates a four sided continuous rectangle. The next horizontal tube parallels this tube across the front and sides ending at the corners but not continuing across the back. the third tube is receded to start at the front vertical support of the arm rests and continues around the back to a similar placement on the opposite side. The fourth horizontal serves as the support of the armrest and fastens into the back frame between the the first and second slat thus reducing the stress on the sofa's slatted back and giving flex to the upper two lines of slats and breaking the visual of the rear view of the sofa into thirds of different values ie 2 slats, slat and cushion and the lower third all cushion. One of the fascinating aspects of McArthur's furniture designs is his continual attention to the visual dialog he has with anyone seeing his furniture whether they are conscious of it or not. The dating of this rare Art Deco couch is based upon its decal label which reads: Warren McArthur Corporation Rome, N.Y. Manufacturer of Anodic Aluminum Furniture Pat. Applied for The upholstery was redone 25 years ago. Note: Arm Height 22", Seat Height 19" Seat Depth with both rows of back cushions 19", with only one row of back cushions 25". The sofa is in excellent condition.

Warren McArthur Style No. 977L AUR 3 Seater Sofa Celadon Mohair 1938
By Warren McArthur Corporation, Warren McArthur
Located in Camden, ME
Rare and early Warren McArthur Style No. 977L AUR three-seat sofa, circa 1938. This example represents a transitional phase in McArthur’s production, preceding his later work designing aircraft seating during the 1940s. Constructed with McArthur’s patented system of precision-engineered anodized aluminum tubing, the frame exemplifies his mastery of structural lightness and visual clarity. The softly contoured seat and back reflect his ergonomic sensibility and his pursuit of mechanical elegance in domestic furnishings. Distinctive black rubber “donuts” at both the feet and armrests are original design features, later replaced in subsequent production with smaller fittings. This early detail, combined with the elongated frame geometry, firmly situates the piece within McArthur’s pre-war output. Reupholstered in celadon green mohair with contrasting ivory piping, the sofa presents a refined interplay of color and texture — industrial yet luxurious. The aluminum retains a subtle, even patina consistent with age. This example is both labeled and cataloged, underscoring its authenticity within McArthur’s documented oeuvre. It is only the second 977L AUR I have handled; the last example was acquired in 2013. A superb and historically significant work from one of America’s foremost machine-age designers, bridging the evolution from streamline moderne furniture...
