About the Item

Sofa designed by N.D. Hansen and Flemming Johansen for cabinetmaker Ove Lander Denmark, 1930s Cuban mahogany frame with linen-blend upholstery and leather piping. From a private Danish collection. This very rare three-seater sofa was first exhibited at the 1936 Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition, an annual furniture exhibition and competition held from 1927 to 1966. It was the main platform for design in Scandinavia during these years, so the designers and cabinetmakers presented only their very best work. The sofa was made by the master cabinetmaker Ole Lander and was produced in very small numbers, if at all. The sofa is comfortable and elegant but also remarkably practical. The upholstery stands out because of the ingenious way the front sections of the armrests have been left bare — a very suitable way of protecting the upholstery in those places that are commonly first to suffer from everyday wear. By allowing the polished Cuban mahogany to protrude, a sense of lightness is added to the overall design. The sofa has been newly upholstered in a linen blend material and contrasting leather piping. Swedish Mid-Century Cabinetmaker Sofa, Sweden 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Svensk design, “Swedish design”, is unquestionably a conventional and popular branding device, with many companies explicitly promoting their products as examples of god design, “good design”. But svensk design does not simply represent “good” design made in Sweden, it also projects a powerful, concrete rendering of a sort of essentialized “Swedishness” embedded in objects, such as this sofa. Rounded out lines, unexpected curvature and innovative shapes from every angle define the design of this model. The aesthetic recalls classic English upholstered furniture...
