About the Item

A three-seat "Coronado" sofa designed in the 1960s by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for C&B (now B&B Italia), it is an excellent example of mid-century Italian design. Il divano è rivestito in vera pelle, di colore cognac, che dona un aspetto caldo e lussuoso. The leather is in excellent original condition, showing only slight signs of use. The seats are extremely comfortable, thanks to the padding made of Polysoft, a cold-cured polyurethane foam, while the cushions are filled with Dacron fiber, which ensures softness and durability. An iconic piece of modern design that combines aesthetics and functionality. Dimensions: H 75 cm; Length: 220 cm. Profondità: 90 cm. Altezza della seduta 44 cm. TOBIA SCARPA (Venice, January 1, 1935) is an Italian architect, designer and restorer. He worked for most of his career alongside his wife Afra Bianchin (Montebelluna, March 28, 1937 - Trevignano, July 30, 2011). Their works can be found in many museums in the United States and Europe, including MoMa and the Louvre[1]. He has collaborated with companies such as "C&B" today "B&B Italia," San Lorenzo Silver and Knoll International[2]. He was also the recipient of numerous honors and awards such as the Compasso d'Oro in 1969 and the International Forum Design in 1992. The couple's design work consists of architecture and everyday objects including furniture, clothing, interior design and glass work. In their designs they focused on the technical and aesthetic possibilities of the materials used. Tobia was greatly influenced by his father, architect and designer Carlo Scarpa.

Tobia Scarpa Coronado Leather Sofa for B&B Italia, 1975
By Tobia Scarpa, B&B Italia
Located in New York, NY
'Coronado' two seat sofa in beautiful cognac leather, designed by Tobia Scarpa and manufactured by the Italian firm, B&B Italia, circa 1975. The seating are made with a then revolutionary kind of molded polyurethane foam for excellent support and comfort. The 'Coronado', was the first ever seating to be built using this new technique: the foam molds were assembled around an iron frame, resulting in a sturdy yet extremely comfortable product. The present two seater sofa offered in its original cognac leather upholstery preserved in excellent condition. Labels affixed on both pieces read 'Coronado' designed by Tobia Scarpa for B&B Italia. Afra and Tobia Scarpa designs were characterized by simplicity and elegance, accompanied with modern and refined aesthetics. During the 1960's, the couple designed the Bastiano sofa and the Vanessa bed for Gavina and the Soriana armchair and Poltroncina 925 for Cassina, now exhibited in the permanent collection of the MoMA. Among their most famous projects is the ‘Coronado’ sofa, made for B&B Italia in 1966 and recognized as one of the first polyurethane models. Other notable collaborations during this decade included designs with Maxalto, Molteni, Meritalia (the Libertà...
