About the Item
This “Fantasy” sofa, designed by Kurt Beier epitomises the avant-garde and experimental nature of postmodern design. Created during a period marked by a break from traditional creative conventions, the sofa combines unconventional materials and bold forms that challenge the boundaries of furniture design. Postmodernism embraced humour, irony, and a playful approach to design, making this piece not only functional but also a statement that serves to inject energy and individuality into any interior.
This delightfully eccentric model is quite simplistic in its form, yet remains focused on the aesthetics of post-modernism. The flamboyant look is the result of a striking visual contrast created through the juxtaposition of the industrial feel of the metal and the luxurious, soft longhair. The backrest is made of steel, a strong and durable material that ensures the sofa's longevity. The metal’s cool, smooth silver surface stands out beautifully against the warmth and cosiness of the longhair upholstery, creating a compelling dialogue between the distinct materials and highlighting the tactile dimension of the design. Wood is also used for the construction of the arms and legs. The smooth wooden accents stand out against the textural sheepskin while also accentuating the individuality of the upholstery. The soft fibres of the lightweight, feathery longhair drape beautifully over the sofa’s seat, while the warm brown colour adds depth. The unique interplay of these visual elements not only increases the versatility of this piece, but showcases the talented decision-making of its designer.
With a sense for incredible craftsmanship and endless passion for innovation, Beier's work captures the essence of the 1980s design ethos, where function and form merge with playfulness. The bold combination of materials, contrasting textures, and sculptural form make this sofa an exceptional piece that stands as both art and furniture, perfect for modern interiors that value individuality and creative expression.

"Concha" Sofa by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, Modern Brazilian Design, 1950s
By Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler
Located in New York, NY
Designed by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, modern Brazilian sofa, iron, and velvet. Brazil, circa 1950s.
Shell or "Concha" sofa is made of iron and recently reupholstered in yellow velvet by the experienced craftsmen in our team. The upholstery was chosen considering the contemporary proposal of the piece.
The sofa features a comfortable seat, clean design, and freedom of user movements and is constructed in a frame with metal rods elegantly positioned to give strength to the piece, a common trait of designers.
The buttons velvet coated between seat and backs were used, by the designers, for an excellent velvet finish, and the restoration proposal was to maintain them.
Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner were the primary designers for the iconic Brazilian furniture...
