Exhibiting a superb patina and rich, mellow tones, this exceptional sofa was hand-upholstered in sheepskin leather by master craftsmen in Holland during the latter part of the 20th century. The depth of character in the leather, combined with the elegant simplicity of the form, speaks to the high standards of artisanal skill and material selection that defined Dutch furniture-making in this period.
The Netherlands became renowned for perfecting the craft of sheepskin leather upholstery, a tradition that gradually influenced makers across Northern Europe. Typically constructed with a solid hardwood frame (often in mahogany, prized for its strength and stability) these pieces were then upholstered in 100% natural sheepskin leather. This type of hide was specifically chosen over cowhide for its superior softness, resilience, and the beautifully distinctive patina it developed over time. Each piece is naturally unique, imbued with a warm, buttery sheen that only improves with age.
By the close of the 19th century, a select group of sofa and chair designs had become enduring classics, reinterpreted time and again by various workshops.
