About the Item

We present the icon of Danish Mid-Century Modern design and a very rare model: the Z-sofa was designed by Danish designer Poul Jensen for the prestigious American manufacturer Selig Furniture from the 1950s. This unique piece is a classic example of Danish modernism, combining functionality with refined form. The sofa's design attracts the eye with its geometric, dynamic Z-shaped armrests, which flow seamlessly into the legs. The sofa's slender frame is crafted from teak in a deep, warm shade of brown, highlighting the natural beauty of the material and the craftsmanship of the joinery. It is upholstered in an original green fabric reminiscent of the 1950s, contrasting with the warm tone of the wood. Due to its museum-quality character, we decided against using new upholstery. The geometric yet visually lightweight structure emphasizes the design's harmony. Thanks to the built-in reclining mechanism, it easily transforms into a functional bed. This sofa is an icon of Danish design, with a dynamic silhouette and unique side profile. The sofa is also a development of the iconic Z Chair. Jensen's designs for Selig combine the minimalism typical of Danish modernism with an American passion for comfort and spacious forms. The sofa aligns with the Danish MCM design aesthetic with its minimalist, functional, yet expressive and powerful form. It's a piece of furniture that not only impresses but also offers comfort, making it an excellent choice for both vintage and contemporary interiors. Poul Jensen was a Danish furniture designer who rose to fame during the golden age of Danish design. He is best known for his collaboration with Selig and for the Z-Chair, also known as the Z Lounge Chair, one of the most iconic examples of Scandinavian modernism. Although not as recognizable as Hans Wegner or Arne Jacobsen, his designs have a lasting place in the history of Scandinavian design. Selig was founded by Mendell Selig and Samuel Wexler in Gardner, Massachusetts, USA in 1931. In the 1950s, the company grew to become one of America's leading importers and manufacturers of contemporary furniture. The company focused on high-end projects, manufactured in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. Their offer consisted of the simple, elegant forms typical of post-war Danish design. Selig is responsible for introducing the American public to many Scandinavian designers and popularizing the modern, future-oriented interior style that became common in the US in the post-war period. The sofa is in original vintage condition, with minor signs of age. A few small, millimeter-sized abrasions on the fabric. The seat height is 38 cm. When unfolded, the sofa reaches a depth of 93 cm. The colors of the products shown in the photos may differ slightly from the actual ones. This is due to individual monitor settings and lighting conditions – the photos were taken in artificial light, which may affect the perception of colors. However, we strive to ensure that the photos reflect the actual appearance of the product as faithfully as possible. The offer may include photos of item in the living space, but these are for illustrative purposes only.
