About the Item
Vintage Norwegian Kubbestol by Jon Gjelstad, Drangedal 1951
A magnificent and authentic example of mid-century Norwegian folk art, this hand-crafted Kubbestol (or log chair / stump chair) is a sculptural piece of heritage from the Telemark region. Dated 1951 and executed by the noted local artisan Jon Gjelstad, the chair is masterfully hand-carved from a single, solid piece of birch or beech wood, showcasing the natural, organic form of the tree trunk. Decorated with typical hand-carved Telemark belt with rosemaling on it.
The chair is distinguished by its exquisite Drangedal-style Telemark Rosemaling, a highly sought-after form of Norwegian folk painting. This professional, hand-painted decoration features elegant, dynamic scrollwork and vibrant floral motifs that bloom beautifully over a rich, traditional farmhouse red and green base. The surface boasts a superb, mellow patina that speaks to its age and history.
Structurally sound and in excellent vintage condition, it exhibits minor, stable age-related checking in the wood all contributing to its authentic character. A rare and collectible work of art, this Kubbestol is ready to serve as a striking accent chair in a discerning interior.
