About the Item

A rare and exquisite early example of the Klismos stool designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Saridis of Athens. This iconic piece draws directly from the classical Greek form that inspired Gibbings throughout his career — a seamless blend of ancient elegance and modern refinement. Expertly handcrafted in Greece by Saridis of Athens, the stool features the designer’s signature sculptural splayed legs and gently curved seat, executed in rich solid walnut. The proportions are both graceful and architectural, capturing the timeless balance between beauty and function. This particular example dates from the early production period, distinguished by its fine joinery and original hand-rubbed finish. The seat retains its original leather upholstery and has developed a warm patina consistent with age and careful use. The stone red wool cushion was added by the original owner to protect this precious piece. A hallmark of mid-20th-century neoclassicism, the Klismos stool remains one of Gibbings’ most celebrated designs — a piece equally at home in refined contemporary interiors or among important design collections. Designer: T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings Manufacturer: Saridis of Athens Origin: Greece Date: circa 1961 (Early Production) Materials: Solid walnut, leather Provenance: the Royal Dutch Shell building designed by architect Charles Pfister.
