About the Item

Joaquim Tenreiro / Pair of Stools Two Different Woods, Iron / Brazil, 1950s Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–1992) is widely regarded as the father of modern Brazilian furniture. Born in Portugal, he settled in Rio de Janeiro and pioneered a new design language that combined artisanal tradition with modernist clarity. His work is defined by the principle of lightness: graceful proportions, slender structures, and the expressive use of Brazilian hardwoods and cane. Collaborating with architects such as Oscar Niemeyer, Tenreiro created pieces that remain timeless icons of Brazilian modernism.
