About the Item
The S31 stool plays on the assembly of three converging legs and manages to achieve a solid, stable base that takes the full weight of a person on a small seat surface. The Technical challenge adds to the stool’s appeal” (from Pierre Chapo, Magen H Gallery).
As with all furniture by Chapo, these pieces show excellent craftsmanship, are constructed in solid wood and were made to last.
French elmwood has become extremely rare due to Dutch elm disease. For this reason, recent editions are generally made of oak or imported elmwood, which have a noticeably different appearance compared to the warm, aged look of vintage Chapo pieces.
Condition: Overall very good vintage condition, ready for daily use. Stool was cleaned and oiled with cooked linseed oil as per Chapo’s original instructions.

Pierre Chapo
Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
