About the Item

A sculptural pair of “Z” stools designed by the influential American modernist Gilbert Rohde, whose work shaped the transition from traditional revival styles into the clean, functional aesthetics of 20th-century design. Rohde, known for his groundbreaking partnership with Herman Miller during the 1930s and 40s, consistently explored new materials and expressive structural forms — and these stools embody that spirit. The dynamic Z-shaped frame is executed in bent tubular steel, creating a visually weightless yet stable construction. Each seat retains its original burgundy vinyl upholstery with a wooden substrate, offering both comfort and authenticity. The circular foot loop completes the composition with a distinctive geometric balance. Well-preserved and highly decorative, this pair works beautifully as sculptural accents, occasional seating, or functional design objects within contemporary and mid-century interiors. A strong example of Rohde’s forward-thinking American modernism.
