About the Item

Scandinavian Modern "Apila" stools by Rauni Peippo for Oy Stockmann AB, Mid-20th Century. Lacquered pinewood. Good vintage condition, minor patina consistent with age and use. Marked. Iconic design. The stools are sold as a set. Rauni Peippo (1934-2021), who studied drawing as a teacher and later as an interior designer at the Ateneum, worked as a young designer in 1964-66 at Stockmann's famous drawing office. The furniture designed at the drawing office was made at the Kerava joinery factory. The exact origin of Apila stool is not known, but it gained international fame when Yrjö Kukkapuro curated Apila for the legendary Finsk Miljöö exhibition in Stockholm in 1966. In later decades, both Lisa Johansson-Pape and Olof Ottelin have been mistakenly credited with designing the Apila stool. Both of them were influenced by the Kerava carpentry factory, and Ottelin was the artistic director of its furniture production at the time of Apila stools birth.
