About the Item

This beautiful set of stools are crafted in the manner of French design duo Audoux-Minet. Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet worked together during the mid-20th century. The duo are known for their innovative use of natural, sustainable materials, including rope, wicker, and bamboo. Their work was heavily influenced by the Modernist movement, which sought to create functional and streamlined designs that were accessible to a wider audience. Like in Scandinavia, there was an early emphasis on wood in most European mid-century design as it connected everyday objects to nature. This set of three stools is a perfect example of this sentiment, and the visual benefits of an understated, organic design. The high quality woven wicker makes these stools an outstanding example of woven furniture. They feature a fairly traditional shape with rounded edges and an airy feel. The straightforward shape highlights the understated beauty of the materials, allowing the beautiful woven pattern and the grain of the wood to stand out. The seats are set on three splayed club feet, stained in a rich colour lending a more dramatic presence to the set. The tripod base is ideal for ensuring the sturdiness needed for a classic piece of furniture made to withstand the passage of time. Being functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, these stools are a great addition to set the tone of a space. The design is strong but subtle, with expert wickerwork thanks to which it can add depth as well as functionality to a space. The interplay of a simple structure and refined detailing evokes a sense of harmony, aligning with the era’s focus on blending beauty with utility. The organic design makes this set stand out with an elemental edge. The colour palette further allows them to easily adapt to almost any interior to either complement a space, or to stand as accent pieces. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The stools have recently been reconditioned. Due to the nature of the materials, the items may have some marks, scratches or discolouration. Woven Rattan Stool, Europe Early 20th Century
Located in Utrecht, NL
In the professional field of interior design, certain pieces and types of furniture hold a timeless allure, effortlessly weaving together functionality, aesthetic appeal, and a rich history. Among these treasures is the simple, way too often overlooked, but extremely versatile stool, This lovely piece from the early 20th century is entirely Crafted from the organic material rattan, and embodies a harmonious blend of natural beauty, craftsmanship, and functional elegance, making it a perfect accent piece for both modern and classic interior settings. Rattan, derived from the climbing palms native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Australasia, boasts a unique combination of flexibility, durability, and lightweight properties. As such, its pliable nature allows skilled artisans to deftly manipulate and weave it into intricate patterns, resulting in furniture pieces like this stool that exude both sophistication and an artisan, rustic charm. Similarly to traditional wooden furniture, rattan possesses a warmth and tactile quality that invites touch and appreciation of its natural texture. The resurgence of stools in contemporary interior design can be attributed to several factors; Firstly, their compact size and versatility make them ideal for maximizing space in smaller living areas or apartments. Stools can easily be tucked away when not in use, serving as convenient additional seating when guests arrive or as a practical surface for holding books, plants, or decorative items. Moreover, their understated elegance, individuality, and timeless appeal complement a wide range of interior styles, from minimalist and Scandinavian to Bohemian and eclectic. At the heart of this rattan stool's charm lies its exquisite weaving patterns and impeccable quality. Each strand of rattan is skilfully interlaced to form intricate circular motifs and geometric designs, showcasing the craftsmanship and attention to detail of its maker. The weaving technique employed in crafting this stool results in a sturdy yet lightweight structure, capable of withstanding the test of time while retaining its graceful silhouette. The stool's slightly splayed, bent legs add a touch of visual interest and stability, while the metal caps on its feet provide both protection and a subtle hint of industrial flair. This thoughtful combination of materials and design elements enhances the stool's durability and aesthetic appeal, ensuring that it remains a cherished heirloom for generations to come. Versatile in its functionality, the rattan stool can serve as a humble pallet for showcasing curated collections or as an elegant flower pedestal, bringing a touch of natural beauty indoors. Its timeless allure and understated sophistication make it a beloved accent piece in modern interiors, where it serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of organic materials and masterful craftsmanship. In conclusion, the intricately woven rattan stool...

Wood Turned Chairs with Woven Rush Seats, Europe Ca 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-century designers were eager to break free from the aesthetics of the past and experiment with new forms, and techniques. At the same time, especially in Europe, the modernist design movement was often based on traditional styles and techniques, such as turned chairs. Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in the late 16th and early 17th century. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. In turned furniture, the individual wooden spindles of the piece were made by shaping them with chisels and gouges while they were being spun, or turned between the centre points of a lathe. The construction of this pair is evocative of the more robust Arts and Crafts Movement, featuring subtle decorative elements such as the finials atop the backs. The sphere-shaped finials aren’t the only ornamentations on the design; the shape of the two splats on the back, the carved stretchers and carving on the feet are all decorative features that make this pair visually arresting. In later turned chairs, like this pair, rush seats were common. Here, the seats are woven around the frames with a light colour that beautifully contrasts to the dark, patinated wood. The partnership of the two natural materials is very effective as well; the wood and rush pair...

Pine Sauna Stools for Finnsauna Lagerholm, Finland 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Sauna stools have been in use for centuries, predominantly in Japan and in Finland. While this form of furniture is mostly a utilitarian object, vintage sauna stools - like this set of four - from these countries are artisanal, beautiful pieces. From Antti Nurmesniemi’s sauna stool (which is part of the MoMA’s collection) to the Japanese Hinoki stools, these vintage wooden pieces are perhaps even more treasured today than in the 50s. Sauna stools are traditionally used as a perch while washing up in the bathhouse before entering the soaking tub. They also make good shower stools or bath-side caddies also because the woods used - pine in this case - are naturally bacteria- and mildew-resistant and withstand humidity well. Stools traditionally have a simple, functional construction, however, these Finnish stools have elaborately carved tops that move beyond the strictly functional role. The tops are composed of four interconnecting parts in a shape that resembles a Celtic knot. These individual parts are connected by two dowel pins to each other leaving the design airy and functional as water has an easy way to flow through. The legs are in a simple, slightly tapered form to support the sitter with similar dowel pins connecting them to the seats. These mid-century sauna stools were made for Finnsauna Lagerholm...
