About the Item

Pair of Scandinavian Modern birchwood stools by Sven Markelius made in the 1930s. These were made to complement his famous "Orkersterstol". Nicely patinated. Can be used as a stool or as a side table. Sven Gottfried Markelius (Stockholm, 1889-1972) was an architect based in Stockholm, active in Sweden from 1915 to 1972, and one of the main representatives of functionalism. He was one of the founders of the International Congress of Modern Architecture in 1928 and in 1931 he collaborated in the drafting of Acceptera, the manifesto of the Swedish functionalists. His project for the Helsingborg Auditorium marks an era in the history of Swedish architecture, moving away from the existing classicist line and incorporating functionalist aspects under the influence of Le Corbusier's thought. It also played an important role in the urban design of Stockholm after World War II. Like other architects of the time, he designed some pieces of furniture for his own projects, such as the Orchestra Chair, the first stackable chair, designed in 1931. Some of his designs are exhibited at the MoMA in New York.
