About the Item

Elegant Louis XVI style stool with oval upholstered seat, supported by fluted tapering legs and a molded apron with inset panel detail. The frame is finished in green with gilt accents, paired with a bold zebra-print textile that lends a chic, modern contrast to the neoclassical form. The combination of refined classical lines and fashionable upholstery gives the piece a timelessly stylish appeal — equally at home in a dressing room, vanity corner, or as an accent stool in a living space. Stamped R.H. Macy Co., Long Island City to the underside, indicating production by the company’s furniture workshop in the mid-20th century. Macy’s operated one of the largest American retail furniture divisions in New York during this era, offering high-quality reproductions of European styles that rivaled pieces by W.&J. Sloane and John Stuart. The Long Island City mark denotes their main manufacturing and warehousing facility, which served the flagship Herald Square store. From a private Main Line Philadelphia estate. Dimensions: 24"W × 17"D × 18"H Condition: Good vintage condition with minor wear and small paint losses consistent with age and use; upholstery in good order with light marks. Attribution: R.H. Macy Co., Long Island City, New York. Origins of Macy’s Furniture Division: 1860s–1870s: R.H. Macy Co. (founded 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy) began selling home furnishings and decorative goods alongside textiles and clothing at its original New York stores. Early “parlor furniture” was typically sourced from local cabinetmakers and New England workshops. 1890s–1910s: As Macy’s expanded into the Herald Square flagship, the store created a full Furniture Department, featuring both domestic and imported pieces (including English, French, and Colonial Revival reproductions). Manufacturing was outsourced to contracted New York City workshops. In-House Manufacturing Era: Long Island City: 1920s–1950s: Macy’s opened a large warehouse and manufacturing complex in Long Island City, Queens, identified by stamps like the one on this stool — “R.H. Macy Co. – Long Island City.” This facility allowed Macy’s to produce proprietary furniture lines under its own name, including Colonial Revival, Louis XV/XVI, Georgian, and Art Deco styles, marketed as quality yet affordable alternatives to fine European imports. These pieces were often sold in Macy’s Home Furnishings Catalogs, with strong quality control and branding akin to department store competitors such as W.&J. Sloane, John Stuart, and Bloomingdale’s “Decorator Shop.”
