About the Item

A strikingly attractive and rare blonde satin birch Windsor armchair in lovely antique condition. Most likely made around 1840-1860 in Oxford, England, this gorgeous and extremely comfortable ‘bar-back’ armchair will add outstanding bygone quality, gorgeous golden colouring and a charming and quintessentially English, Antique Country aesthetic to any interior. One of six similar chairs we currently have in stock, these are fantastic and versatile antique armchairs – eminently useable and very comfortable, they were crafted to be used as well as admired and their outstanding design has lasted the test of time. Generously sized and reassuringly heavy, this stunning armchair was hand-crafted from solid and substantial satin birch wood. Displaying beautifully aged, rich, golden tones and gorgeous wavy satin grain patterning, satin birch is an extremely rare wood for an antique Windsor chair and was clearly chosen by the craftsman to make a superb, rare piece which must have been much loved throughout the years. Bar-backs are a less ‘showy’ Windsor chair design and somewhat overlooked as a result, but their simplicity and functionality easily stand the test of time. This one features a chunky saddle-shaped seat which the arms, back and legs affix into, as in all Windsor chairs. And if above the seat is all about the graceful curves, below it is about the craft of ‘turning’. It has shapely back stiles which the gently curving bar backs and lovely arms fit into, the arms being beautifully carved with a delightful flourish of notch-turned ends. The arm supports have a lovely bulbous turned design, while the round, splayed and tapering legs have a charming quattro-notch turned design and are secured by a turned and tapering H-stretcher. All in all this is an extremely rare and excellently crafted blonde Windsor armchair, which won’t fail to impress and add colour, comfort, antique quality and useable Country elegance to any setting. CONDITION This armchair is in very good antique condition. Solid, sturdy and structurally sound, the joints are all secure and have only the most minor if any movement. It is generously sized and being made of solid satin birch wood, it is surprisingly and reassuringly rather heavy. It has to-be-expected marks and bumps to show its not inconsiderable age, which we love about it, but it could be stripped and refinished to make it gleaming gold throughout. There are a few to-be-expected, hard-to-notice historic wormholes mainly to the rear left leg, for which the whole chair has been treated for good measure. Overall it's an extremely rare and fabulous Windsor armchair in lovely antique condition and if well looked after it should remain so for another 150+ years – please see the photos.
